Realizing an Active Airport Environment – SATCE & Visual Systems
Dr. Jeremy Goodman MRAeS, Product Lead (SATCE), Quadrant Group
Since 2009, Dr Goodman has helped lead Quadrant Group’s development of an automated Simulated ATC Environment (SATCE) solution for flight training simulation devices (FSTDs). His role covers product oversight, market relations and regulatory affairs. Jeremy has been the Industry Editor for the FSEMC Working Group on SATCE since its inception in 2012. This Group published ARINC Specification 439A in Sept. 2016, and is currently updating its guidance on SATCE for FSTDs. Jeremy is also a member of the IPTA, contributing to the activity of the Training Devices Workstream concerning ICAO Document 9625. He has consulted and presented widely on SATCE at international pilot training and engineering conferences and industry meetings including WATS, APATS, EATS, RAeS, FSEMC, EFTeG, and STIG.
Dennis Hartley, Principal Systems Engineer, Collins Simulation & Training Solutions
Mr. Hartley is a Systems Engineer for Collins Simulation and Training Solutions and has over 38 years of visual simulation experience. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Florida, and Graduate Certificate in Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. After working at General Electric Simulation and Control Systems (acquired by Lockheed Martin in 1993) for 18 years, he joined E&S in 1998 eventually leading to Director of Engineering. With the acquisition of E&S by Rockwell Collins in 2007, he continued as Engineering Manager of Product Development, including image generators, DBGS, synthetic environment, projectors, and displays. In 2011, he transitioned to Lead Systems Engineer for Visual Systems. Mr. Hartley has been an active member of the FSEMC Working Group on Simulated ATC Environment (SATCE) and involved with the integration and testing of SATCE technology with flight simulator visual systems.
Realizing an Active Airport Environment – SATCE & Visual Systems
With the recent introduction of Simulated Air Traffic Control Environment (SATCE) capability in flight simulators, the long-held desire to provide a busy, interactive airport visual scene is now a realization.
A tightly integrated SATCE and visual system delivers a truly immersive training experience, that offers significant training advantages.
SATCE system requirements and corresponding flight simulator visual system considerations will be discussed. Short video examples from a full flight simulator will be used to highlight the significant increase in airport visual environment fidelity, and enhanced training made possible by introducing multiple controlled dynamic other traffic.
Future challenges and lessons learnt from innovative technical development, integration and trials of SATCE and visual system technologies will also be discussed.
