Richard Caldwell, Lead Instructional Systems Designer, 777-9, Boeing Global Services

Richard W. Caldwell is the Lead Instructional Systems Designer (ISD) for the Boeing 777X. He is part of the Learning and Technical Data Solutions’ group in Boeing Global Services (BGS), Renton, WA.

Rich is responsible for pilot training curriculum for 777X variants, which includes both theoretical and practical training analysis, design, development, and implementation. Rich interfaces with worldwide Customers and Boeing personnel including representatives from New Airplane Development, Innovation, Flight Technical and Safety, and Flight Standards to create and advance Boeing training solutions.

For the past 2.5 years, Rich has contributed to Boeing’s 777-9 EBT analysis and curriculum products. Rich participated in the EASA Evidence-Based Training (EBT) Conference in Cologne, Germany in May 2019. The conference was attended by European regulators, manufacturers, and airline Customers from around the world. Rich generated many of the ground-breaking Boeing EBT documents including Customer presentations and documents, EBT Implementation Plan, and EBT Instructor Calibration training.

Prior to contributing to Boeing, Rich worked with L3 Unmanned Aircraft Systems and L3 Mission Integration Division (MID), Publications and Training, in Carrollton and Greenville, Texas. Rich participated in flight operations in Utah and Texas, and he authored training/curriculum, presentation, and flight operations’ manuals for various Boeing and other airplane types.

The Introduction of Evidence-Based Training for the Boeing 777X

As an industry leader, Boeing is mindful of aviation industry evolution as we continue our innovation. We recognize the demand for pilots around the globe, and that a new generation of pilots are changing industry demographics. We see higher passenger demand, more complex airspace, and more automation in technologically-sophisticated operations, and the effect that these have on the aviation industry.

As researchers and pioneers in the exploration of the aviation industry’s transformation, Boeing advocates the academics of Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) and Evidence-Based Training (EBT) to predict industry needs and to mentor and train well-rounded, skilled pilots. As such, Boeing’s Training Development team designed 777X training using extensive quantitative and qualitative training needs analysis and research of industry data. The 777X training plan incorporates elements such as a competency framework and assessment that builds cognition and skills through mentoring and scenario-based training, an amended instructor role, enhanced tablet-based training, and methodical placement of EBT training scenarios in the practical training.
